5 Top Styling Tips For The Bedroom

When designing client’s homes as an interior designer, one of the key areas of concern is usually the bedroom. The bedroom can often be forgotten during day-to-day life as we spend most of our waking hours in the living areas. With a few simple styling touches the bedroom can go from a boring and bland room that you roll into at the end of a busy day to a space you can’t wait to retreat to and enjoy spending time in. From styling the bed, adding feature walls, the correct furniture pieces to buy and styling touches, today we are covering it all.

Tip 1 – The Correct Amount Of Cushions

There is a fine art to styling a bed to ensure it looks both welcoming and beautifully presented. Some people may go overboard and pile on as many cushions as possible whereas others fall short by simply not knowing where to begin. As an interior designer, I like to keep things simple, yet polished and intentional. Start with your sleeping pillows tucked underneath your quilt cover and layer your standard pillows horizontally on top. In front of these you can place your larger European pillows to act as a backdrop for the feature cushions in front. A tried-and-true number for decorative cushions is two square followed by one small rectangle. This is a simple, easy and effective cushion styling solution and allows you to have a styled look, yet not too many cushions that it becomes a chore to make the bed.

Tip 2 – Large Bedside Tables

Another common mistake I see when designing and decorating bedrooms is bedside tables that are teeny tiny and completely off scale to the bedroom. When it comes to bedside tables, my number one tip is to go as large as you possibly can within the space. This creates a luxurious look, provides you with ample storage and makes the space feel more balanced. This is especially evident with King size beds as they are a large furniture piece that takes up a substantial amount of the room, you need to balance it out with appropriately sized bedside tables.

Tip 3 – Feature Walls Remain A Classic

Feature walls can be a controversial topic as some believe they are a ‘dated’ design style, but here at Eliza Grace Interiors, I think they are a classic. Feature walls help to anchor the room and draw your eye to the key focal point of the space, which is usually the wall with the beautifully styled bed and bedside tables. I recommend keeping feature walls subtle and opting for a textured wallpaper, VJ panelling, wainscoting or a subtle paint colour. This allows you to create a focal point without it feeling too overpowering or heavy within the space.

Tip 4 – A Seating Option

A seating option is always a great idea to have in a bedroom if your space allows. This can be as simple as a bench seat at the end of the bed where you can sit and put shoes on, or an occasional chair placed in the corner of the room. When adding an occasional chair to the space I like to style it with a cushion and a throw blanket draped over the back for a cosy and welcoming look. This can also be a great place to add personality and a pop of colour such as a patterned fabric armchair or brightly coloured bench seat. By adding a seating option to the room, the space becomes multipurpose and allows for you to sit and have a conversation while your partner gets ready or put your shoes on and finish getting ready before you head out the door.

Tip 5 – Finish With Artwork

Lastly, a bedroom is never complete without a piece of art or framed photo. When it comes to art in the bedroom, I like to stick to a more neutral colour palette and opt for colours that evoke a sense of calm and tranquillity. Avoid over stimulating artworks as the bedroom is a space for relaxation and rest. When it comes to framed photographs in the bedroom, Feng Shui suggests we should have photos of the couple or individual who sleeps in the room only and avoid any family and friend photos. Keep these to the living room and other areas of the home and keep the bedroom for framed couple photos only.
